If you're sourcing steel structures from China for the first time, what should you focus on during a factory visit?
The truth is: some suppliers present only their best side while concealing potential issues. They'll show you a pristine showroom, introduce their sales team, and skip the actual production floor.
I'm Zhang Jing, a technical engineer at Jiaqiang Steel. Over the past X years, I've personally guided dozens of international clients through factory audits in China. In this article, I'll share the 7 critical checkpoints you must verify before placing an order.
My goal is simple: help you know exactly what to look for and which questions to ask during your next factory visit.
Checkpoint 1: Raw Material Storage & Sourcing
The quality of your steel structure starts with raw materials. Here's what to check:
Where Does the Steel Come From?
Ask the factory: Which steel mills do you source from? Reputable factories use steel from major mills like Tangshan, AnSteel, or Baosteel. Smaller, unknown mills may offer lower prices but inconsistent quality.
What to Look For:
- Raw material storage area: Is it organized and covered?
- Clear labeling by grade and batch number
- Moisture protection (do not store steel outdoors exposed to rain)
- Material Test Certificates (MTC) for each batch — request to view actual documents
Red Flags 🚩
- Raw material yard is disorganized and lacks clear structure.
- We cannot provide MTC or mill certificates upon request.
- Outdoor steel coils stored without protection (rust visible)
- The salesperson says, "We buy from whoever is cheapest" — run away.
Checkpoint 2: Production Equipment & Capacity
The equipment showcases the factory's capabilities and precision standards.
Key Equipment to Inspect
- CNC Cutting Machines:Precision cutting ensures accurate member lengths (±1mm tolerance)
- Automatic Welding Lines:Consistent weld quality, faster production
- Shot Blasting Machines:Surface preparation for anti-corrosion coating (SA 2.5 grade required for export)
- Painting/Spray Booths:Controlled environment for uniform coating thickness
Inquire About Capacity
Questions to ask:
- What is your monthly production capacity (in tons)?
- How many workers are currently employed?
- How many orders are currently in production?
A factory operating at 70-80% capacity is healthy. Overloaded (100%+) risks delays. Underutilized (<50%) may signal strong pricing opportunities but could compromise long-term reliability.
Red Flags 🚩
- The workshop is mostly empty with idle equipment.
- Old, rusty machines (pre-2000 era) — impacts precision
- No shot blasting equipment (outsourced or this critical step is skipped)
- Salesperson cannot answer basic capacity questions
Checkpoint 3: Welding Quality Control
Welding is the heart of steel structure quality. Poor welds = risk of structural failure.
Inspection Checklist
- Welder Certifications:Request to view certificates. Certified welders undergo rigorous testing.
- Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS):Documented procedures for various joint types and thicknesses.
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):Ultrasonic testing (UT) or radiographic testing (RT) reports for critical welds.
- Visual Inspection:Inspect completed welds — they should be uniform, free of pores, cracks, or undercut.
Perform On-Site
Ask the factory manager: "Can we inspect a recently completed column or rafter?" Inspect the weld seams closely:
- ✓ Smooth, consistent bead pattern
- ✓ No visible holes or gaps
- ✓ No spatter (small metal droplets) on surrounding surface
- ✓ Weld size matches drawing specifications
Red Flags 🚩
- Welders cannot display certifications
- No NDT equipment on-site (or they claim "We don't need it")
- Rough, uneven welds with visible defects
- Factory won't let you inspect completed units
Checkpoint 4: Dimensional Accuracy & Tolerance
Precision matters. If components don't fit together on-site, you'll face costly delays.
Standard Tolerances
For primary structural members (columns, rafters):
- Length: ±2mm
- Width/Depth: ±2mm
- Hole positions: ±1.5 mm
- Diagonal difference (squareness): ≤3 mm
Perform On-Site
Bring a tape measure. Ask: "Can we measure this completed column together?" Check:
- Total length (compare to drawing)
- Flange width and web height
- Bolt hole spacing (center-to-center)
- Diagonal measurements (both diagonals must be within 3mm of each other)
A trustworthy factory will welcome this. A questionable one will make excuses.
Red Flags 🚩
- Factory does not allow measurement
- Measurements show a deviation > 3mm on primary members.
- "Don't worry, it will fit on-site" — this is a lie
- No quality control records for dimensional inspections
Checkpoint 5: Surface Treatment & Anti-Corrosion
This is where many export orders go wrong. Long ocean voyages + tropical climates = rust if not handled properly.
Shot Blasting Standard
Export-grade steel structures require SA 2.5 blast cleaning (ISO 8501-1 standard) to remove all mill scale, rust, and contaminants.
Ask to see: The blasted surface should have a uniform metallic gray appearance with no shiny spots (unblasted areas).
Coating Thickness
For exports to Africa and Southeast Asia:
- Hot-dip galvanized: 80-100 μm (microns) minimum
- Paint coating: 60-80 μm dry film thickness
- Combined system (galvanize + paint): 120-150 μm total
Perform On-Site
Request an Elcometer coating thickness gauge. Measure multiple points on the galvanized component:
- Readings should consistently show 80-100μm+
- No spots below 70μm (thin areas rust first)
Red Flags 🚩
- No shot blasting equipment (manual grinding is used instead).
- Unable to measure coating thickness (no Elcometer on-site)
- Coating thickness is less than 70μm for export orders
- "Our workers know how much paint to apply" — without measurement, this is just guesswork
Checkpoint 6: Packing and Container Loading
Even high-quality steel can arrive damaged if packed poorly.
What to Check
- Protection During Transit:Are machined surfaces (bolt holes, connection plates) wrapped in VCI paper or otherwise protected?
- Moisture Protection:Are desiccant bags placed inside containers? (50 g per cubic meter is standard)
- Securing MembersSteel straps to prevent shifting during rough seas
- Edge Protection:Rubber or plastic caps for sharp edges
Ask About Experience
Questions:
- How many export orders have you shipped to Africa or Southeast Asia?
- Show me photos of previous container loadings.
- How many 4 0HQ containers do you typically need for a 5,000 m² warehouse?
Expected answer: 15-20 x 4 0HQ containers (approximately 680-760 m³ total volume).
Red Flags 🚩
- The factory has no export experience (domestic shipments only).
- No packing photos available
- "We load it however it fits"—this will cause damage.
- Unable to answer basic container loading questions
Checkpoint 7: Documentation & Certifications
Accurate documentation is essential for customs clearance and quality assurance.
Required Certifications
- ISO 9001:Quality Management System Certification
- CE Marking:Required for European projects (EN 1090 certification)
- Factory Business License:Verify they are a legitimate manufacturer, not a trading company.
Export Documents
Request samples from previous shipments:
- Commercial Invoice
- Packing List (per container)
- Bill of Lading
- Certificate of Origin
- Material Test Certificates (MTC) for all steel batches
- Quality Inspection Reports
Red Flags 🚩
- No ISO certification (or expired)
- Unable to generate export document samples
- "We'll provide documents after payment" — insist on viewing samples first.
- Certificates appear to be photoshopped or repeatedly photocopied.
