Steel frames and reinforced concrete frames are both common for warehouses, workshops and industrial buildings. The better choice depends on the project, not on the material in general. The questions below usually decide the outcome.

Questions that decide the choice
- Clear span: do you need long column-free space for storage racks, production lines or vehicle movement?
- Schedule: is there a fixed date by which the building must be usable?
- Local resources: are cement, aggregate, rebar and experienced concrete contractors available near the site?
- Import logistics: is the route for imported components already organised, including port and inland transport?
- Fire and process: what fire resistance does the process or the stored material require?
- Vibration: will heavy vibrating equipment be installed, and does it need isolation?
- Later changes: is extension, relocation or modification expected during the building's life?
- Environment: humidity, salt spray or chemical exposure determine the protection system required.

Combining the two
Hybrid solutions are common: a steel frame with concrete floors, or concrete columns with steel roof trusses. The combination is chosen to suit the load path, the fire requirement and the construction sequence.
